Zebulon Recreation Department's Karate Class, under the direction of Mr. Charles Mann, brought home an impressive collection of awards from the North Carolina Nationals Invitational Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Karate Championships which were held in Jacksonville, North Carolina, on Saturday, July 21. The competition was under the direction of Shihan Larry Isaac, Director, and held at White Oak High School in Jacksonville. Rep. Walter Jones attended the meet and brought greetings to the participants.

Participants in the meet came from Virginia, South Carolina, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, as well as North Carolina.

Mr. Mann has been teaching Okinawan style karate through the Zebulon Parks and Recreation since 1988. His instructor was Shihan Isaac. Classes meet for beginners on Tuesday nights at 6:00 p.m. at the Davis National Guard Armory in Zebulon. Advanced class meets at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night classes are at 6:00 p.m. for all groups.

In June 2001, Zebulon Parks and Recreation was represented at the North Carolina State Games in Cary, NC, by 6 participants. Winning medals at that competition were: Dean Rose, gold medal in weapons, silver in sparring and kata; Jared Lloyd, silver medal in sparring; Mary Kate Powell, gold medal in kata and weapons.
